Tree Fellas

Interesting how the ash dieback disease has suddenly bought forth a lot of comments on the value of modern tree planting schemes. I always thought that planting trees – any trees and anywhere was good. Good for the climate, good for wildlife and good for the environment. Well it appears I was wrong.

In a well written piece in the Guardian, Andy Byfield puts forward his views on what he terms heavy-handed tree planting.

Reading the piece makes you sad when you think that over 90% of our 80 million Ash trees may be killed by the disease. It is also fascinating to learn just how prolific the Ash tree is and how it can repopulate forest areas so easily.

These thoughts are not new. In an article published in 2005 similar arguments were put forward about tree plantations, suggesting that they should use native species and promote biodiversity.

Jobs to be done in the Garden

Lawns have had a hard time this year and we would recommend a little TLC for the lawns, hollow tining, weed and feed, and if moss is a problem a treatment and a light scarify, this maybe better left for the Spring, but why not book it in now?

Garden Furniture

Garden furniture needs to be moved undercover and if it is wood this needs to be a dry store if at all possible. We offer a collection, clean and return service for all types of garden furniture.

Winter Pruning

Winter Pruning, this is a great time to cut back borders that have become overgrown or just cutting back a few unruly shrubs that have taken over and are hiding other shrubs, obviously leaving things like the Buddleia until the Spring is much nearer.

Paths and Pavement

Pressure washing of paved areas and paths to remove lichens and algae’s that can make them very slippery.

Garden Machinery

Servicing of lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, secateurs, garden shears etc are all things that we have been doing for all our tools and we also offer this service to our Regular Clients. We have workshop space available in December and early 2013.

Interesting Article in Daily Mail – no really!

Daylight shrubbery is the title and it details the problems caused by unqualified or downright criminal people putting themselves forward as gardeners.

“An increasing number of householders are being ripped off by cowboy gardeners, who knock on doors promising a green-fingered makeover but leave trees, plants and lawns looking worse than before. Trading standards officers have reported a surge in cases of what has been dubbed ‘daylight shrubbery’.

The article can be found here.

It raises a number of issues not least that gardeners should be regulated using a licensing scheme – that will be interesting, watch this space.

This of course is not the first time this subject has received newspaper coverage. The Daily Telegraph ran this piece in early November quoting the same sources. Interestingly the number of complaints for Oxfordshire was 87, I wonder how many other people felt badly treated but did not complain?
